Clinical Context
COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has led to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide since its emergence. Despite the availability of vaccines and treatment options, there remains a high need for effective prophylactic measures, especially for individuals at high risk of severe disease. Current preventive strategies primarily focus on vaccination and monoclonal antibody therapies, which may not be accessible or effective for all populations. Ensitrelvir, a novel oral antiviral, has been developed to fill this gap by providing a preventative option for individuals exposed to COVID-19, potentially reducing the incidence of infection and subsequent complications. The approval of ensitrelvir represents a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle against COVID-19, particularly as new variants continue to emerge.
