Clinical Context
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease characterized by widespread inflammation and tissue damage in various organs. The condition affects approximately 1.5 million people in the United States, predominantly women of childbearing age. Current treatment options include corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, which can manage symptoms but often come with significant side effects. Despite available therapies, many patients experience persistent disease activity, indicating a need for more effective and convenient treatment options. Anifrolumab, a monoclonal antibody that targets the type I interferon receptor, has shown promise in clinical trials for reducing disease activity in SLE. The recent FDA approval for subcutaneous administration may enhance patient adherence and quality of life by allowing self-administration in a home setting.
