Clinical Context
Migraine is a prevalent neurological disorder characterized by recurrent headaches that can significantly impair quality of life. It is estimated that approximately 12% of the adult population in the United States suffers from migraines, with many experiencing episodic forms defined as 1-14 headache days per month. Current preventive treatments include various pharmacological options, but many patients remain inadequately managed, highlighting a need for more effective therapies. Atogepant is a novel oral calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist, designed to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. The ADVANCE trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of atogepant in adults with episodic migraine, providing evidence for its role in enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life.
