Cut Exam Time 65% with AI Ultrasound

The newly launched Voluson Performance 18 and 16 ultrasound systems offer a variety of features to bolster image quality and improve workflow efficiency.

In addition to providing automated annotations and measurements of fetal anatomy, the SonoLyst suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features enable up to a 65 percent reduction in exam time for the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISOUG) second trimester exam, according to GE HealthCare, the manufacturer of the Voluson Performance 18 and 16 ultrasound devices.

The company added that the recently FDA-cleared ultrasound platforms combine shadow reduction capabilities with automatic gain adjustments to enhance image quality and uniformity. GE HealthCare noted that other attributes of the Voluson Performance 18 and 16 ultrasound devices include an updated touch panel interface and integrated wireless Vscan Air probes.

“The Voluson Performance series builds on a legacy of innovation, combining Voluson imaging technology with intuitive design and AI-powered tools designed to simplify exams, save time and support efficient, consistent care delivery,” said Gerald Seifriedsberger, the general manager for women’s health ultrasound at GE HealthCare. “By putting powerful, advanced solutions in the hands of providers, we’re helping expand access to high-quality women’s health imaging and advance a healthier future for women.”

The Voluson Performance 18 and 16 ultrasound systems are being showcased at the 35th ISUOG World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology through September 17, 2025 in Cancun, Mexico.

Clinical Perspective — Dr. Mohit Joshi, Psychiatry

Workflow: With the new Voluson Performance 18 and 16 ultrasound systems, I can expect up to a 65 percent reduction in exam time for the ISOUG second trimester exam, thanks to the SonoLyst suite of AI features. This means I can see more patients in less time, which is a significant improvement to my daily routine. The automated annotations and measurements of fetal anatomy will also streamline my workflow.

Economics: The article doesn't address cost directly, but I'd expect the improved workflow efficiency and reduced exam time to lead to cost savings in the long run. The ability to see more patients in less time could also increase revenue for my practice. However, I'd need more information on the pricing of the Voluson Performance 18 and 16 ultrasound systems to fully assess their economic impact.

Patient Outcomes: The enhanced image quality and uniformity provided by the Voluson Performance 18 and 16 ultrasound systems, combined with the shadow reduction capabilities and automatic gain adjustments, will likely lead to more accurate diagnoses and better patient outcomes. The improved image quality will also enable me to detect potential issues earlier, which can lead to more effective treatment and better health outcomes for my patients.
