Clinical Context

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the colon. The condition can lead to severe symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Current treatment options include aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, and immunomodulators, but many patients do not achieve adequate control of their disease with these therapies. The introduction of biologics has revolutionized the management of UC, targeting specific pathways in the inflammatory process. The recent approval of additional biologics, including upadacitinib and mirikizumab, reflects the ongoing evolution of treatment strategies aimed at improving patient outcomes and achieving remission.
