Clinical Context
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by insulin resistance and insufficient insulin production, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. The global prevalence of diabetes has surged, with over 830 million people affected as of 2022, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatment options [1]. Current standard treatments include daily basal insulins such as insulin degludec and glargine U-300, which help manage blood glucose levels but may pose adherence challenges due to the daily injection requirement. Insulin icodec, a novel long-acting insulin, has been developed to provide a more convenient weekly dosing schedule, potentially improving patient adherence and glycemic control. This new formulation could be particularly beneficial for patients struggling with the daily regimen of traditional insulins.
